The delta hosts about 300 bird species and hosts approximately 80,000 birds in winter. It provides shelter for 10% of the world's flamingo population. Gediz Delta is one of the largest deltas with 14 thousand 900 hectares of wetland. The Delta, which has the protection status of Ramsar Area, Wildlife Protection Area and Natural Sites Natural Sites, has been declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
