The capital city of The Ukraine, Kiev, exploded. Heavy fighting between protesters and the government controlled riot police resulted in the deaths of 2 protesters, hundreds injured. The protests started out as a way of the people letting their government know they wanted closer ties with Europe and not Russia, a path chosen by the government. Instead of listening to the people on the streets the government quickly made up some new anti-protesting laws and rushed them through parliament, which the political opposition says paves the way for a police state. . Anti-government protesters gather in front of a fire to get warm at a road block in Kiev on January 26, 2014. The Ukrainian opposition vowed to press on with protests despite an offer of top posts made by President Viktor Yanukovych as protesters took control of another building in the capital on January 26. Two months after the protests began in November over his decision to back out of an EU pact Yanukovych on January 25 offered to share leadership with Arseniy Yatsenyuk as prime minister and Vitali Klitschko as deputy prime minister in a bid to end the crisis. Crowds of protesters surrounded regional administration offices in three eastern cities on January 26 as a rebellion against President Viktor Yanukovych spread into some of his former strongholds.
