KIEV, UKRAINE, JANUARY 20, 2014: A wooden catapult was erected by demonstrators on Hrushevsky Street in the center of Kiev to be used against police forces during violent clashes with police forces. A small, little known group, made up of young men with rightwing views called Right Sector took an active role in the fighting. A short distance away is Independence Square, which has been the center of a protest movement for approximately 2 months and has been dubbed the Euro Maidan (Euro Square) by the demonstrators. The protest movement began in November after the Ukrainian government said it would not sign an EU Association Agreement that would have brought the nation closer to the European Union.
