KIEV, UKRAINE, FEBRUARY 18, 2014: A wounded demonstrator receives medical assistance at Saint Michaels Cathedral in central Kiev during street clashes between riot police and pro EU and anti government demonstrators in the Ukrainian capitol Kiev. The cathedral and monastery opened its doors to demonstrators as a place to rest during street clashes between riot police and pro EU and anti government demonstrators. Dozens were killed and hundreds were injured in clashes the day and night before in the city center. A protest movement centered on Independence Square, which has been ongoing for approximately 3 months and has been dubbed the Euro Maidan (Euro Square) by the demonstrators, began in November after the Ukrainian government said it would not sign an EU Association Agreement that would have brought the nation closer to the European Union.

KIEV, UKRAINE, FEBRUARY 19, 2014: Andrij, 34, lays on a mattress on the floor in a makeshift medical clinic in the office of an NGO in the Ukrainian capital Kiev that has made space available for wounded demonstrators, some of whom are afraid to go to the hospital because they are fearful they will be detained there by the police. On Tuesday morning, as demonstrators went to picket parliament, Andrij stayed back to rest in the occupied Zhovtnevi Palace, which was renamed Svoboda, or Freedom, Palace by demonstrators. He found himself trapped inside the building as riot police entered after they pushed back demonstrators during fierce clashes in which dozens died and hundreds were wounded. Andrij was beaten repeatedly by several different groups of riot police before being let go. He suffered a broken arm, severely bruised legs, a concussion and other injuries.
