Pope John Paul II (C) blesses followers a few seconds before being shot and seriously wounded 13 May 1981 at Saint Peter's square by a Turkish extremist Mehmet Ali Agca. Agca was jailed for 19 years in Italy for the attack on the Pope, which left the head of the Roman Catholic church seriously wounded. He was pardoned by the Italian president in June 2000, and extradited back to Turkey where he was jailed for the 1979 attacks

The Turkish prisoner Ali Ag??a answers to the questions of the court's president, 27 May 1985 in Roma, during the hearing of the trial against turks and bulgarians charged in the pope plot. Ali Ag??a was serving a life sentence because he tried to assassinate Pope John-Paul II 13 May 1981. He was pardoned by Italy's president in June 1985 and returned to Turkey, where he was imprisoned for the murder of a newspaper editor.
