Born Simone Roussel in 1920, she debuted on screen at the age of 15 in a bit part. Soon she progressed to lead roles, becoming the most popular actress in France. She won the 1946 Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award for her role in La Symphonie Pastorale. She largely retired from screen in 1968, but has occasionally returned to both lead and cameo roles. She authored an autobiography "With those eyes", in 1977. Among some 60 films in which she acted : Quai des Brumes (1938) co-starred with Jean Gabin, Remorques (1941), Fabiola (1949), Maria Chapdelaine (1950), Les Orgueilleux (1953) co-starred with Gerard Philippe, Les Grandes Manoeuvres (1955).
